A new UK doctoral training programme aims to strengthen the next generation of clinical researchers working on fungal diseases. Applications are now open, with a deadline of 4 December 2026.
The newly launched Mycology Doctoral Training Programme for Healthcare Professionals (MycoDTP) offers an opportunity for healthcare professionals interested in developing a career combining clinical practice and research in medical mycology.
The programme aims to develop 15 future clinical academics, working across five research themes with supervisors from four leading universities.
Why is this important?
Fungal diseases are an important and often under-recognised challenge for healthcare systems. Conditions such as aspergillosis can be difficult to diagnose, require prolonged treatment and demand specialist expertise.
Although the UK has internationally recognised strengths in medical mycology research, translating scientific discoveries into improvements in clinical practice requires healthcare professionals who understand both the laboratory and the needs of patients.
Developing this clinical academic workforce is essential for improving fungal disease diagnosis, treatment and patient outcomes.
Opportunities for healthcare professionals
MycoDTP is designed to support healthcare professionals interested in pursuing doctoral research in medical mycology.
The programme brings together research expertise across four universities, offering opportunities to develop projects addressing important questions in fungal disease.
Potential applicants are encouraged to explore the available research themes, identify suitable supervisors and review the application guidance on the programme website.
Applications are now open
The first stage of applications opened on 27 October 2026.
Key dates:
- 4 December 2026, midday: Stage 1 application deadline
- 18 December 2026: Stage 1 outcomes announced
