If you are already a NAC patient

Patients receiving care from NAC should use the contact arrangements provided by their clinical team.

NAC patients are normally given direct contact details for the specialist nursing team. Keep these details somewhere accessible, particularly if you need advice about your treatment or a change in symptoms.

For appointment administration, letters and general enquiries, contact the NAC administration team using the details above.

Important: Routine email and administration contacts should not be used for medical emergencies. If you are seriously unwell, have severe breathing difficulties or are coughing up a large amount of blood, call 999. For other urgent medical concerns, use your clinical team’s urgent contact arrangements or NHS 111 as appropriate.

How can I be referred to NAC?

NAC has a nationally commissioned NHS role in chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA), alongside wider specialist clinical services for other forms of aspergillosis.

The referral pathway depends on the condition involved.

Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA)

Patients being referred for CPA are normally referred directly to NAC by their local specialist consultant. The centre uses a dedicated referral process rather than the standard NHS Choose and Book pathway.

Other forms of aspergillosis

NAC also assesses patients with other complex Aspergillus-related conditions, including allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) and Aspergillus bronchitis.

For non-CPA cases, the official NHS guidance states that referrals may be made by a consultant or GP using the NHS e-Referral Service.

Referral arrangements and eligibility can differ between conditions. Your healthcare professional should consult the current NHS guidance before making a referral.

Can I receive specialist care closer to home?

Yes. NAC is not the only NHS service with expertise in aspergillosis.

Several hospitals across the UK have specialist clinicians experienced in chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, allergic forms of aspergillosis and other complex fungal conditions.

Many patients receive appropriate care through local or regional respiratory, infectious diseases, allergy or specialist asthma services.

NAC also supports clinicians through specialist advice and multidisciplinary discussions, helping patients benefit from additional expertise without necessarily travelling to Manchester.

If you believe that you need further specialist assessment, discuss the NHS options with your current healthcare team.

Advice and multidisciplinary case discussions for clinicians

NAC provides specialist advice to NHS healthcare professionals managing patients with complex aspergillosis.

Clinicians may request advice about diagnosis, investigations, antifungal treatment, treatment monitoring or other challenging clinical decisions.

The centre also offers remote multidisciplinary team (MDT) case discussions, bringing together relevant specialist expertise to review complex cases.

These discussions can support clinical decision-making while patients remain under the care of their local healthcare teams.

Healthcare professionals should use the official NAC guidance for requesting advice, submitting cases and providing the required clinical information.

Patient information and support

Not every question about living with aspergillosis requires a clinical appointment.

Through NAC CARES and aspergillosis.org, patients and carers can access information, educational resources and opportunities to connect with others affected by aspergillosis.

These include:

These resources are intended for education and peer support. They cannot provide individual diagnosis, prescribe treatment or replace advice from a healthcare professional.

Patient feedback and service improvements

NAC welcomes feedback about patients’ experiences of its services. Feedback helps the team understand what is working well and identify opportunities for improvement.

Patients wishing to raise a concern about their individual NHS care should use the appropriate clinical team or Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust feedback and complaints arrangements.

A dedicated NAC Patient Feedback & Improvements page is being prepared to explain how patient feedback contributes to service development.

Frequently asked questions

Can I contact NAC directly to request an appointment?

You can contact the administration team for general information, but specialist appointments normally require an appropriate NHS referral.

Can my GP refer me?

This depends on the condition. For CPA, referrals normally come from a local specialist consultant. For non-CPA conditions, a GP or consultant may use NHS e-Referral, subject to the applicable referral requirements.

Do I need to travel to Manchester?

Not necessarily. Some patients attend NAC in person, while others benefit from specialist advice provided to their local healthcare teams.

Does NAC provide private appointments?

No. NAC is an NHS service and does not offer private consultations.

Can I ask NAC CARES for medical advice?

NAC CARES provides patient information, education and opportunities for discussion. It does not replace clinical assessment or individual medical advice from your healthcare team.
