Got a problem with your lungs that won’t go away?

While they are rarer than bacterial infections, some chest infections and allergic conditions are caused by fungi such as Aspergillus, which need specialist tests and treatments. Antibiotics will not work on them.

For example:

  • Severe asthma that isn’t controlled well with inhalers and steroids can sometimes be made worse by the body becoming sensitised (allergic) to moulds such as Aspergillus (SAFS) or (ABPA).
  • If you have lung damage from TB or COPD, you are at greater risk for fungal lung infections such as chronic pulmonary aspergillosis
  • Aspergillus and other fungi can also cause sinus problems and ear/eye/nail infections

We’re here to help!

The National Aspergillosis Centre is a highly specialised NHS clinical and laboratory service based at Wythenshawe Hospital (part of Manchester NHS Foundation Trust). We run clinics mainly for those with chronic or allergic aspergillosis.

If the treatment you have been given for your lung condition isn’t working, ask your doctor whether it could be fungal. If so, they may feel it is appropriate to refer you for specialist treatment. As well as NAC (Manchester), there are other consultants throughout the UK with expertise in fungal conditions.

Please bear in mind that your GP might not recommend referral to NAC if it is not appropriate for your symptoms, and that some fungal conditions do not require antifungals.

You don’t need a referral to use our online resources, including the Aspergillosis Patients and Carers website and the Aspergillus&Aspergillosis website. However, to join our Facebook support group you will need to have been diagnosed with aspergillosis.

LIFE Worldwide is an educational website aimed at clinicians. If your doctor isn’t sure what tests to run, or whether you need a referral, feel free to share this link with them.

The Global Action Fund for Fungal Infections is an advocacy organisation. They keep track of how many people are affected by fungi around the world and influence policy to help them access the life-saving tests and medicines they need.

The NAC Patients and Carers website has information about aspergillosis conditions and treatments written without the medical jargon for patients and their friends and families. Find a specialist near you, raise awareness, find a support group, or read advice on coping with aspergillosis from our patient group.

The Fungal Infection Trust is a UK charity that promotes awareness of fungal infections and allergies. Their fundraising goes towards training scientists and paying for research into better diagnostics.
